Controversies Surrounding Guan Gong Marrying Mazu Escalate! Shrine Allegedly Involved in Tax Evasion and Illegal Construction, Confirmed by Municipal Government

Reported 7 months ago

In a temple in Tainan City dedicated to Guan Gong, controversy arose during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday due to a poster promoting a wedding ceremony between Guan Gong and Mazu, which led to backlash and even the temporary closure of its Facebook page, resulting in ongoing repercussions. The temple was revealed to lack official registration as a temple, suspected of engaging in illegal construction, and possibly evading taxes, accusations partly confirmed by the city government. The shrine's services, ranging from lighting incense to spiritual consultations costing up to 20,000 NT dollars, raised concerns of potential tax evasion. Additionally, the temple's lack of registration prevented legal collection of fees from believers, and its conspicuous discrepancies in height and construction material from neighboring buildings led to allegations of illegal construction. Even after the temple attempted to mitigate the situation with a lawyer's statement, issues such as missing seals on documents and a similarly named law firm in the north releasing clarifications further fueled the controversy. With believers of Guan Gong and Mazu now scrutinizing the temple, it appears the shrine may have underestimated the consequences of the initial wedding controversy.
