Controversy Erupts Over Mazu and Guan Sheng Deity's Marriage, Private Altar Leader Clashes Publicly Declaring 'You Don't Get to Decide'

Reported about 1 year ago

A private shrine in Tainan, Taiwan, caused uproar by announcing a marriage between their worshipped deity Guan Sheng (Guan Yu) and Mazu from a temple in Beishanwei. Mazu was even given the husband's surname, becoming 'Heavenly Empress Guan.' This led to dissatisfaction among followers, with Mazu's temple clarifying it was not involved. The shrine claimed they were following divine guidance. Tensions rose when the private altar leader clashed with a representative from Mazu's temple over removing 'Heavenly Empress Guan' signage from the shrine's sedan chair, with the altar leader asserting 'You don't get to decide.' The situation escalated to physical altercations before eventually calming down.
