Controversy over Priority Seats Erupts with 2 Incidents of Forced Giving Up Seats in 1 Week, Taipei Metro: Unable to Abolish Priority Seats due to Current Regulations

Reported 11 months ago

Amid growing demands to abolish priority seats on Taipei Metro, two incidents of physical conflicts erupted in 1 week as elderly passengers pressured younger ones to give up their seats. Taipei Metro responded, stating that current regulations, such as the Disability Rights Protection Act, restrict the removal of priority seats. However, with 14 disputes related to priority seats occurring from January to May this year, revisions to the law may be necessary. The priority seats are designed to accommodate those in need, not just the elderly.
