Controversy over Wang Xiaoshuai's Dark Past Linked to Hu Bo's Death Results in Removal as Head of Jury at Taipei Film Festival

Reported 11 months ago

The Taipei Film Festival recently announced that mainland Chinese director Wang Xiaoshuai would be the chairman of the 'International New Director Competition' jury for this year’s event, including members like Ko Chen-tung and Chen Chieh-yao. However, due to revelations of Wang Xiaoshuai's past violent remarks towards the late emerging director Hu Bo, controversy arose over his suitability for the position. In response, the Taipei Film Festival stated that they have decided to cancel Wang Xiaoshuai's invitation as a juror after reflecting on various opinions, and will seek a new chairman to maintain the event's normal operation. The controversy stems from Wang Xiaoshuai's involvement with Hu Bo during the production of 'An Elephant Sitting Still,' where his oppressive behavior, including sharp criticisms of Hu Bo's work, is said to have contributed to Hu Bo's tragic suicide.
