Controversy over Marriage Ceremony at Wu Xuan Altar, Tainan: Claims of Marrying Guan Gong and Mazu Stir Backlash, Temple Denied Entry to Tian Hou Palace, Clarifies it's Not a Wedding Reception

Reported 11 months ago

On June 9, 2024, Wu Xuan Altar in Tainan announced on Facebook about an upcoming 'marriage' ceremony between Guan Sheng Di Jun and Tian Shang Sheng Mu, which sparked controversy. The temple faced opposition as they attempted to proceed to the Tian Hou Palace for the event and was denied entry, leading to an apology from the temple staff citing a mistake on the poster, which has since been amended to clarify it as a religious event rather than a wedding ceremony. The temple's earlier posts suggested a partnership between Guan Sheng Di Jun and Tian Shang Sheng Mu, upsetting believers who pointed out Guan's wife is Hu Yue, not Mazu. The temple clarified it's the deities' spirit manifestations being united, not the actual gods themselves, and continued with their plans despite the misunderstanding.
