Corruption Case Reopened, Mayor Cheng Wen-tsang Appears Serious in Custody Court in Taoyuan

Reported about 1 year ago

Taoyuan Mayor and former chairman of the HIA, Cheng Wen-tsang, is facing allegations of receiving bribes of 5 million for a land redevelopment project during his term as mayor. Despite being granted bail of 5 million by the Taoyuan District Court on his 57th birthday, the Taoyuan Prosecutor's Office successfully appealed the decision, leading to a custody hearing today. Cheng appeared late and serious at the hearing, contrasting his previous demeanor. Prosecutors believe there is a risk of collusion and witness tampering among the accused, leading to the High Court's decision to overturn the bail and order a reassessment by the district court. If Cheng is detained, he will face a 3-year suspension from the DPP. Additionally, the DPP Ethics Committee initiated an investigation into Cheng Wen-tsang's case after an emergency meeting.
