Former Taoyuan mayor and current chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council, Zheng Wen-can, is suspected of corruption related to land development during his tenure as mayor. Yesterday, he was interrogated by the Taoyuan District Prosecutor's Office and detained for 16 hours before being prohibited from contact. Zheng Wen-can denied any wrongdoing through his lawyer and stated he would cooperate with the judicial investigation. Many media personnel believe the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is harsh for choosing to detain him on his 57th birthday. The prosecutor's office cited suspicions of bribery related to his official duties. Zheng's detention on his birthday has raised surprise and shock among the public, with some pointing out the timing chosen by the DPP.
