Could Energy Policy Change? Over 60% of People Support Extending Nuclear Power Plant Operation According to Latest Poll

On July 2, 2024, a survey by the Beautiful Island Electronic News indicated that 50.2% of the public lacks confidence in Taiwan's electricity supply, with 64.1% advocating for the extension of nuclear power plant operations. Despite Minister of Economic Affairs Guo Zhizhui repeatedly affirming the sufficiency of electricity in Taiwan, doubts remain. Legislator Huang Guochang emphasized the need for a serious energy policy without ideological governance, addressing issues such as renewable energy and potential power shortages. Taiwan Power Company has reassured that with the decommissioning of one nuclear reactor and the introduction of new ones, along with renewable energy sources, the power supply will meet demand. However, concerns persist among the public regarding the reliability of the electricity supply.
