The CECC spokesperson, Chang Shu-hui, revealed on June 25, 2024, that Taiwan saw a surge in local COVID-19 cases last week with 817 new confirmed cases and a 30% increase compared to the previous week. The death toll also rose by 40 cases last week, marking the third consecutive week of record-breaking COVID-19 cases since the CECC declared a new wave of outbreaks, indicating a possible plateau phase in mid-July. Variants of concern were mainly JN.1, followed by KP.2 and KP.3, prompting continued monitoring by health authorities. Notably, severe cases involving children were reported, emphasizing the importance of vaccination and monitoring symptoms.
