According to Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control, the COVID-19 variant strain situations reveal that while the JN.1 strain remains dominant, the KP.2 strain has increased in proportion, with KP.3 remaining stable. As the outbreak intensifies, vaccination efforts with the XBB vaccine have surged, with over 130,000 doses administered in a week. Studies show that the current predominant variant strains have a stronger immune evasion capability and increased infectivity but not necessarily higher pathogenicity. The XBB.1.5 vaccine in use is effective in preventing infection by 50-60%, severe illness by 60-80%, and decreasing mortality by 60-70%. Health experts warn that even with past infection or vaccination, protection may be insufficient against new variant strains, potentially leading to reinfection and symptoms like fever and respiratory infections.
