Criminals are exploiting outdated Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards to steal food and cash assistance from 42 million lower-income Americans, as highlighted by a victim's experience of having her government food aid drained. The lack of modern security features like chip technology on EBT cards puts recipients at risk, with thieves easily cloning cards to withdraw cash or make purchases. Calls for improved security measures, such as chip cards and real-time balance monitoring, to be implemented in the EBT system are being made by victims and advocates alike, as Congress considers updates in the 2024 farm bill discussions.
