On June 24, 2024, cybersecurity firm Recorded Future released a report alleging that a hacker group likely funded by Beijing intensified cyberattacks on Taiwanese government agencies during the January presidential election and before the new government took office. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning dismissed the report, calling it 'unprofessional and lacking credibility.' The report identified the hacker group 'RedJuliett' targeting various institutions in Taiwan, as well as in Laos, Kenya, Rwanda, Hong Kong, South Korea, and the U.S. and African universities. Chinese authorities are accused of possibly using Fujian province as a base for intelligence gathering on Taiwan, but Mao Ning denied knowledge of the specific claims.
