A female graduate student surnamed Jiang and her boyfriend surnamed Zhang were sentenced to life imprisonment for killing Jiang's father with a hammer after he stopped supporting her financially while she was studying abroad in the US. The incident, which shocked society, resulted in the father's body being abandoned in the wilderness. Despite pleas from Jiang's mother and sister for the death penalty, the first trial sentenced them both based on the possibility of 'social rehabilitation,' with the second trial in Taichung High Court upholding the decision, although further appeals are still possible.
