Death Toll Rises as Over 1000 Pilgrims Die in Mecca Heatwave

Reported 8 months ago

Amid a record-breaking heatwave in the Islamic holy city of Mecca, over 1000 pilgrims have died from heat exhaustion during the annual Muslim pilgrimage, with half of them lacking the required permit to enter air-conditioned tents for rest. The scorching temperatures of 51.8 degrees Celsius have proved fatal for many pilgrims, with Egypt reporting over 530 deaths and an additional 40 individuals missing. Various Muslim countries have also confirmed pilgrim deaths in Mecca, including Indonesia, Pakistan, and India. To ensure safety, Saudi Arabia has restricted access to Mecca without the necessary pilgrimage visa, which serves as the sole permit for both foreign nationals and Saudi citizens during the pilgrimage period.
