The declining birth rates in Taiwan have now affected the number of conscripted males, with statistics showing that the number of males eligible for conscription has fallen below 100,000 for the first time, estimated to be less than 75,000 by 2031. In response, the Ministry of the Interior has announced plans to amend the law to raise the application threshold for supplementary recruits to expand the source of soldiers. The one-year compulsory military service has been reinstated starting this year, but due to declining birth rates, the number of conscripted males has significantly reduced. The Ministry of the Interior estimates that in 2024, the number of conscripted males will be less than 97,828, marking the first time it has fallen below 100,000, with a further estimated drop to less than 75,000 by 2031.
