As the 27th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover from the UK to Beijing approaches on July 1, 2024, the city has witnessed a decline in public demonstrations due to the National Security Law and the recent passing of the '23 Items of Legislation.' This year, the HK government's July 1 celebrations were met with minimal street protests and a decrease in dining out for the celebration period, as many residents chose to go north, especially with the newly opened Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel making travel between the cities more accessible. Additionally, the iconic neon lights that once lit up Hong Kong's streets are disappearing amidst the city's ongoing transformation.
