Decline in Physical Disc Usage: Sony's Northeast CD Factory in Japan to Cut 250 Jobs, Accounting for 37% of Total Staff

Reported 12 months ago

Despite the popularity of streaming platforms, some entities still use traditional data carriers like CDs; however, the overall quantity has significantly decreased. Sony recently announced plans to lay off 250 employees from its CD factory in Northeast Japan, constituting 37% of the factory's workforce. The decrease is attributed to the rise of streaming media and reduced demand for physical storage media like CDs. The affected areas primarily involve disc burning (CD-R, DVD-R, and BD-R), but not disc pressing for movies, music, and games. Sony plans to offer early retirement options to the affected employees.
