Due to the declining birth rate, it is projected that there will be 31,000 fewer freshmen in the next 5 years, leading to a potential closure of 40 universities. According to the Ministry of Education, the number of university freshmen is estimated to drop to below 190,000 in the next school year and further down to 164,000 by the 117th school year. This trend is expected to continue, with an average annual decrease of 2,900 freshmen over the next 16 years.
