Disney has cast newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as the lead in the live-action remake of 'Moana,' joining Dwayne Johnson who will reprise his role as Maui. Laga‘aia, a 17-year-old from Sydney, Australia, expressed excitement at representing young girls who look like her and celebrating Samoa and Pacific Island cultures. The film, directed by Thomas Kail, is set to premiere on July 10, 2026, and features a talented cast including Auli‘i Cravalho as executive producer and other actors from New Zealand. 'Moana' is a significant movie for Disney, having been a top-streamed film in the U.S. and with an animated sequel in the works.
