The union representing dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast container ports has halted labor contract negotiations due to a conflict regarding automation, less than four months before the current six-year pact is set to expire. The International Longshoremen’s Association and the US Maritime Alliance have yet to reach an agreement covering about 45,000 dockworkers from Boston to Houston, amidst a backdrop of global shipping disruptions causing record-high ocean freight rates. The dispute originated from automated technology used by APM Terminals in Alabama, violating the current contract according to the union.
