Reported 12 months ago

In June 2019, a pregnant woman in Taichung gave birth and the newborn went into shock due to Meconium-stained amniotic fluid, ultimately leading to the baby's death. The family sued the doctor and hospital for over 14 million in damages, sparking backlash in the medical community. Renowned obstetrician Dr. Shi Jingzhong expressed concern over the morale impact on doctors in high-risk specialties, noting that one-fourth of Western doctors in Taiwan are opting for cosmetic surgery due to increasing legal risks. He emphasized the detrimental effects of such high compensation on medical practitioners and the potential decline in specialists in fields like cardiac and neurosurgery. Dr. Shi also highlighted the importance of addressing medical disputes through institutional changes to improve the healthcare system.
