Yahoo News reported that on June 26, 2024, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with 32 member countries appointed the outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the new Secretary General, handing him the responsibility during a critical time with Russia's advance on Ukraine and the upcoming U.S. election. Rutte, 57, who has been in office for 14 years, is seen as capable of leading NATO through this dangerous period. He will succeed Jens Stoltenberg on October 1, prior to the upcoming NATO summit in Washington next month. Rutte's appointment was approved by NATO member state ambassadors, with Stoltenberg welcoming him as a consensus builder and strong leader.
