A recent study by scientists from the University of California, San Diego, predicts that by 2029, due to the melting of the polar ice caps causing changes in the Earth's shape, the rotation of the Earth will slow down. This could result in a minute in 2029 being shortened to 59 seconds, causing potential crises such as disruptions in computer communications and networks. Scientists have been adjusting time for decades, adding leap seconds periodically to synchronize atomic clock time with Earth's rotation. The difference between International Atomic Time and Coordinated Universal Time will possibly lead to a rare 'negative leap second' in 2029.
