Since the strong earthquake on June 23, the lodging rate in Hualien has remained low, and a recent incident on the Taiwan Railways has further discouraged tourists, resulting in a summer lodging rate of only 15%. Despite the Tourism Bureau offering subsidies of NT$1000 for both weekdays and weekends, lodging rates are still at a low of 15%. Calls have been made for government relief loans and reductions in utility bills and taxes to support the industry. Efforts are being made to restore confidence in traffic safety to attract more visitors to Hualien.
