Eating Ultra-Processed Foods Increases Constipation Risk

Reported about 1 year ago

A recent study published in the journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology found a strong correlation between consuming 'ultra-processed foods' and an increased risk of constipation. These foods, which are highly processed and industrially manufactured, often contain additives, preservatives, artificial colors, and other chemicals, and are low in nutritional value but high in sugar, fat, salt, and energy density. The study indicated that swapping 10% of ultra-processed foods with minimally processed foods reduced the risk of constipation by 10%. Another UK study also linked increased consumption of ultra-processed foods with an 8% increase in the risk of irritable bowel syndrome, showing a close relationship between these types of foods and digestive issues.
