ECB expected to approve Greek Banks' request to resume dividend payments

Reported 4 months ago

Senior bankers revealed that the European Central Bank is likely to approve Greek banks' request to restart dividend payments after 16 years, indicating the sector's recovery and return to normalcy. The Greek banking sector has undergone recapitalizations and reduced its Non-Performing Exposure ratios significantly in recent years, leading to profitability and a desire to distribute dividends up to 30% of 2023 profits. The ECB's positive response to the dividend payment request is anticipated in the near future, as Greece's major banks, including Eurobank, National Bank, Piraeus Bank, and Alpha Bank, have collectively reported profits of approximately 3.5 billion euros in 2023, benefiting from high interest rates and a robust economic growth.
