On June 19, 2024, Ecuador suffered a nationwide blackout with the capital Quito's metro system shutting down due to a transmission line fault, leaving 18 million people without power and causing chaos on the streets. The blackout was attributed to a cascade disconnection in the power grid. With Ecuador heavily reliant on hydropower for 75% of its electricity, recent droughts and temporary closures of hydroelectric plants due to heavy rains have exacerbated the country's power supply issues, leading to rotating power outages nationwide.
