Ecuador to Cancel Visa-Free Access for Chinese Nationals Due to Increasing Overstays

Reported 8 months ago

Ecuador announced on June 18, 2024, that it will suspend a bilateral agreement allowing Chinese nationals to stay visa-free for up to 90 days starting July 1, due to a concerning increase in the number of overstaying Chinese citizens. The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry stated that the number of Chinese immigrants has surged in recent months, with around 50% of entrants not leaving within the designated timeframe. Over 32,000 Chinese citizens who entered Ecuador between 2023 and 2024 did not register their departure. While no specific destinations were mentioned, some of these individuals used Ecuador as a starting point to reach other countries. China has expressed opposition to all forms of human trafficking, emphasizing its strong stance against it.
