Egg Prices Hit Near 3-Year Low as Consumers Eat Less Eggs, Chen Chun-Chi Says

Reported 9 months ago

Recent data shows that chicken egg prices are continuously dropping, reaching a near 3-year low due to a combination of decreased consumption during the off-season, surplus production capacity, and the aftermath of last year's imported egg incident. With current farmgate prices at 25.5 NTD and wholesale prices at 35 NTD, unless demand significantly increases, further price drops are possible. Agriculture Minister Chen Chun-Chi noted that consumers are eating fewer eggs this year as backend markets have not felt the price decrease. To address the egg surplus issue, the Agriculture Ministry and Poultry Association will start encouraging the elimination of 1.8 million low-producing hens in July, providing a subsidy of 20 NTD per hen. Chen Chun-Chi also discussed improving agricultural migrant worker policies at an economic committee meeting and stressed the need for appropriate price adjustments and increased egg consumption.
