In Japan, there has been an increase in traffic accidents involving elderly drivers in recent years, prompting the government to urge seniors to voluntarily return their licenses. Referred to as 'license return' in Japanese, this issue has garnered attention as more elderly individuals struggle with driving safely due to age-related declines in cognition and physical abilities. While the number of seniors voluntarily returning licenses peaked around 2019 at approximately 350,000, the trend has since declined, posing challenges for ensuring road safety and alternative transportation options for the elderly.
