Elderly Traffic Fatalities Tripled: Focus on Senior Driver Safety

A concerning rise in traffic fatalities among drivers aged 65 and above in Taiwan has prompted attention, with numbers increasing over threefold from 2011 to 2023. Motorcyclists in this age group are the most affected. In Taipei, senior motorcyclist casualties account for 56% of overall traffic accidents. Programs like senior driving courses aim to instill correct safety practices among older individuals. With the country aging, the importance of enhancing driving skills and knowledge for the elderly is highlighted to prevent accidents, with a particular focus on motorcyclists, who make up over 70% of elderly traffic casualties in 2023.
