In the early hours of June 27, 2024, a young rider in Kaohsiung brought his mainland Chinese brand electric scooter to the police station for record-keeping but was shocked when the scooter's modified battery caught fire while parked on the roadside. Despite efforts to extinguish the fire, the battery kept smoking, leading to fears of penalties for the owner. In a separate incident in Tainan, two individuals were injured due to a lithium battery fire caused by charging an electric bike at home. This incident raises concerns over the safety of modified batteries and the risks associated with charging lithium batteries indoors.
