Researchers studying elephants have found that when one elephant makes a call, another group of the same kind might respond, sometimes with only one individual responding within the group. Analyzing over 100 elephant sounds in Kenya, a recent study using machine learning models identified name-like elements in their sounds. When played these sounds, elephants often responded more enthusiastically to what appeared to be calls directed at them, possibly indicating a form of name-calling among elephants. The study was published in Nature Ecology & Evolution and suggests that elephants may 'call each other in a way similar to names.'
