Embarrassing! China's Most Difficult-to-Pronounce Surnames Lead Young People to Change to Maternal Surnames

Reported about 1 year ago

In China, there is a rare surname 'Jiao' with only around 300 descendants living in a few villages in Hu'nan. This surname brings awkwardness as it sounds like 'what's your name?' and even 'moaning.' Some young 'Jiao' individuals opt to use their maternal surnames to avoid confusion. The origin of the surname dates back to a Ming dynasty official named 'Zhongkang' who settled in Hu'nan during wartime, choosing to adopt the 'Jiao' surname, though the reason and original surname remain a mystery. This surname is among the rarest in China with only 3,500 Han surnames currently in use.
