The latest national greenhouse gas emissions inventory was released by the Environmental Protection Administration, revealing a 4% decrease in net greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 compared to 2021, with reductions primarily in the energy sector, industrial processes, and product use. However, carbon emissions from the energy sector have increased rather than decreased since the base year of 2005, and carbon emissions in the transportation sector have also risen. The increase in energy and transportation sector emissions is attributed to economic growth, with plans to review energy calorific values and implement updates. Taiwan's semiconductor industry, which uses refrigerants, has seen an increase in hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions, prompting the drafting of regulations to manage HFCs and gradually reduce their consumption starting from 2029 to combat global warming.
