EU accuses Meta of breaking digital rules with ad-free option

Reported 12 months ago

The European Union accused Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, of violating the bloc's new digital competition rules by making Facebook and Instagram users choose between viewing ads or paying to avoid them. Meta introduced the paid ad-free option for European users in response to strict data privacy regulations, allowing them to pay at least 10 euros a month to avoid targeted ads based on personal data. The European Commission's preliminary investigation found that Meta's advertising model did not comply with the Digital Markets Act, as it limits users' ability to freely consent to the use of their personal data across Meta's services for personalized ads.
