The European Commission has initiated an investigation into the state aid provided by Germany to Lufthansa during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The 6 billion euro ($6.5 billion) recapitalization, initially approved under the COVID Temporary Framework but annulled by the EU court last year, is currently under appeal by Lufthansa. The investigation aims to determine if the financial support adhered to EU state aid regulations. Lufthansa has already repaid the aid in full, but the outcome of the investigation may impact future state bailouts. The company had anticipated the formal inquiry as stated in its 2023 annual report.
