Last week, EU leaders failed to reach a consensus on the four top positions within the EU during an informal summit. The final decision is expected to be made this Thursday at the regular EU summit. Ursula von der Leyen, the current President of the European Commission from Germany, is highly likely to be reelected for a second five-year term. Support from the largest party in the new parliament, the European People's Party (EPP) is seen as crucial, with von der Leyen needing to secure at least 361 votes out of the 406 seats held by the EPP, the Social Democrats, and the Liberals. Negotiations are ongoing to ensure von der Leyen garners enough votes for reelection in the European Parliament vote scheduled for July 17 in Strasbourg.
