Every June since the 1970s, musicians, fans, and industry professionals in the United States celebrate Black Music Month, originally founded in 1979 by Kenny Gamble. The month aims to highlight Black artists' contributions and position Black art in the center of American culture. Throughout the years, the celebration has evolved to promote, protect, and perpetuate the business of Black music rather than solely celebrating its history. Although some see Black Music Month as a limitation in focusing on Black music excellence in a concentrated period, others view it as a necessary celebration highlighting the significant contributions of Black musicians throughout history.
