Former OpenAI board member shares a detailed account of the CEO's removal for the first time.

Reported 4 months ago

In an interview on "The Ted AI Show" podcast, former OpenAI board member Helen Toner revealed that the board only learned of the existence of ChatGPT through Twitter, shedding light on the ousting and subsequent rehiring of OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman last November. Toner described a toxic atmosphere fostered by Altman, citing instances of psychological abuse reported by two OpenAI executives to the board as a catalyst for his removal. Altman returned to OpenAI after a staff uprising, with Toner attributing his reinstatement to fears of company collapse without him and concerns of retaliation from Altman.
