TikTok is reportedly developing a clone of its recommendation algorithm for its 170 million U.S. users to operate independently of its Chinese parent company ByteDance. The effort to split the source code started late last year, anticipating potential U.S. operations divestiture. Engineers from both countries are working to separate code bases to address political risks, with plans for TikTok U.S. to have a separate recommendation algorithm. A technical separation could take over a year, and while TikTok and ByteDance are fighting the U.S. law in court, they are proceeding with the split to demonstrate independence.
