As the COVID-19 pandemic enters the endemic phase, Taiwan's CDC reported 623 new severe local cases and 38 deaths last week, a 90% increase from the previous week. The KP.2 and KP.3 variants are on the rise, with infectious disease expert Huang Kao-pin warning that their transmission ability is 1.2 times higher than before. The infection rate and death toll are nearing a doubling, prompting calls for expedited vaccination to mitigate risks, especially as the summer break approaches, potentially accelerating virus spread. Huang also warns about the increased transmission in the younger population, emphasizing the importance of vaccination, mask-wearing, and hand hygiene to protect against the more transmissible variants.
