A new study suggests that children as young as 3 who consume a high amount of ultraprocessed foods are at greater risk for cardiometabolic problems in adulthood, such as heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, analyzed data from over 1,400 children in Spain and found that those who consumed the most ultraprocessed foods had higher risk factors like BMI, blood pressure, and waist-to-height ratio. Experts emphasize the importance of promoting healthier food alternatives from a young age to prevent long-term health issues and stress the impact of early nutrition on lifelong dietary habits.
