Chinese state media CCTV News recently exposed numerous scams on the popular tourist destination Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, Fujian Province, including selling dead seafood as fresh, passing off freshwater pearls as ocean pearls, and overcharging tourists. After the report, Xiamen authorities took action by setting up a special task force to regulate the tourism market, closing down problematic shops, and ordering two travel agencies to cease operations for rectification. The expose revealed a pattern of exploitation and fraud, prompting government intervention.
