According to a study by Taipei Nursing University, there have been 140 long-term care tragedies in Taiwan between 2009 and 2023, with 40 cases of spousal homicide and 22 cases involving elderly spouses aged over 65, accounting for 60%. Elderly caregivers often sacrifice their well-being to care for their disabled partners, leading to mental and physical exhaustion and tragic outcomes. The lack of knowledge about long-term care resources and reluctance to use them contribute to their distress. The government is urged to understand the underlying reasons for non-use of long-term care resources and provide assistance to prevent such incidents.
