Reported about 1 year ago
In Taipei City's Beitou District, a mahjong association operating under the guise of a 'leisure hall' was recently uncovered for illegal gambling activities. Despite claiming to provide a platform for mahjong exchanges, the association was actually running an illegal gambling den under the pretext of legality. Following reports from concerned family members about gambling addiction issues, the police investigated and raided the mahjong association located on Zhonghe Street in Beitou District. During the operation, 16 gamblers aged between 50 and over 80 years old were apprehended, along with the 47-year-old person in charge. Evidence seized on-site included over NT$10,000 in kickbacks, over NT$80,000 in chips, and around NT$200,000 in cash. Those involved will face charges under Article 266 of the Criminal Code for gambling in public places, with a maximum penalty of NT$50,000. The Beitou Police District emphasized the danger of gambling addiction and vowed to continue cracking down on illegal gambling establishments to restore law and order.
