An exclusive report revealed a case where a 60-year-old elder in Taipei received a call from someone posing as a social worker from Kaohsiung, claiming that the victim's ID had been used fraudulently to claim aid money. Believing the fake police instructions, the victim opened a bank account for online transfers as requested. Subsequently, the scammers coerced the victim into setting up a property mortgage at a land office in the name of assisting a fake investigation. This type of scam has reportedly caused losses exceeding millions, with many elderly victims falling prey due to trust in government agencies and lack of legal knowledge. To combat such scams, the police have established prevention measures and advised the public to be cautious.
