Family Accuses Nursing Home of Cremating Patient Without Notification

Reported about 1 year ago

A family in New Taipei City discovered that their 64-year-old relative had been cremated without their knowledge, sparking outrage. The woman had been living in a nursing home for three years and passed away in May, but her family only found out in June. The nursing home claimed they notified the social worker but had no obligation to inform the family. However, the Social Affairs Department expressed regret for not notifying the family and stated that both social workers and families should be informed. The Health Bureau will also strengthen inspections of institutions. The family alleges improper handling by the institution, while the institution argues that as the patient was placed by the government, they were not required to inform the family. The Social Affairs Department apologized for the lack of immediate notification and confirmed there was no mistreatment found during their inspection.
