FDA Bans Brominated Vegetable Oil in Food Due to Safety Concerns

Reported 12 months ago

The FDA announced that they will ban brominated vegetable oil (BVO) from food and beverages over safety concerns. BVO is a vegetable oil modified with bromine, used to stabilize citrus flavorings in drinks. Studies showed animals fed BVO had high bromine levels in their bodies, leading to thyroid enlargement. Companies have one year to phase out BVO-containing products following the FDA ruling.
