FDA urges states to protect public from bird flu in raw milk

Reported 11 months ago

The FDA has urged states to increase testing in herds producing raw milk for sale and to use regulatory powers to stop sales where herds test positive for bird flu. The agency's call follows a bird flu outbreak spreading among dairy cows, with Minnesota becoming the 10th state to report an infected herd. The FDA emphasized the potential risk of drinking contaminated milk, despite uncertainty about the transmission to humans, as cats and dairy workers have been infected after exposure. The FDA is recommending heat treatment for raw milk products and plans to share new research on bird flu in these products. More information is available from the CDC.
